Contact Sharon Randall
She was born in Hackensack, New Jersey and was always writing throughout her childhood and teen years with early success in poetry contests and essay competitions. As the first member in her family to attend college, she studied Creative Writing at Old Dominion University in Virginia.
When her parents adopted a toddler from Guatemala when Sharon was ten, Sharon fell in love with Spanish. After finishing university, Sharon lived for five years in Honduras and Costa Rica, serving single mothers in poor communities through various programs. She returned to the U.S. to live in the Washington, DC area, where she pivoted to begin a corporate career.
Her experiences of working with both the destitute and the privileged have provided her with a rich and broad perspective which she leverages in her writing.
However, the experience which broadened her most as a person was the birth of her second son, Davis, who was born with Down syndrome. While at first this unexpected development seemed disastrous and life-ending, across the early years and since, she has come to appreciate living with Down syndrome as a life-affirming opportunity.
For fifteen years she ran a playgroup organization for families in Massachusetts, experiencing the benefits of being part of a community. Now with new challenges ahead for her son who is twenty-one, Sharon is ready to navigate whatever the future holds for him. She continues to provide guidance for her oldest and youngest sons also navigating their way into adulthood.
Although Sharon’s writing highlights specific challenges faced by families living with disability, her writing also points to the broadly applicable truths that can serve as a foundation for a life well-lived.
